This season’s top look is rugged and refined
Hiking-style boots and warm flannels are hitting the streets hard this season to create a masculine, alpine-inspired look. Conjuring up visions of mountain retreats and campfires at an ultra-posh cabin, this is a style that we are absolutely on board with.
Striking the balance between form and function
If you’re not planning on chopping any wood this winter, you can still rock the cabin-in-the-woods style in a city-appropriate way. Leather boots and flannel are the two things you absolutely need, but it’s all about the about quality, fit, and fabric.

The absolute best flannel is made in Portugal, and we are so excited to be introducing Portuguese Flannel to The Helm. This is a brand that has combined incredible traditional fabrics with master craftsmanship.

Boots by Danner
Hiking boots are this season’s big look. The key to this style is looking like you could summit a mountain at any time, while still fitting right in on city streets. There’s no better brand to do that than Danner, and we are thrilled to be bringing this classic brand to The Helm.
Danner is one of the most iconic boot brands out there. They have stood the test of time, with roots dating back to the 1930s. Their Portland Select collection is built by hand in Oregon, and if you ask any hiking aficionado, they will tell you these might just be the best boots you can get.
Their Mountain Light boot is THE original hiking boot. They have a timeless look, which is important because they have been known to last a lifetime. They’re comfortable right out of the box, whether you’re backpacking up a mountain or strolling the city streets. This is really a must-have for any collection.
Layer up
Once you’ve got the flannel and the boots, think about how you can add onto the look, either to dress it up or down.
Corduroy trousers are our top choice for this look, but denim also works in grey or blue. To dress the look up, choose a sport jacket in a soft, natural tone. Add an air of sophistication with a wool overcoat.
You can also wear your flannel as an overshirt, with a solid or patterned cotton t-shirt underneath for more of a casual look. We like this striped T from A.P.C., but a slub cotton shirt like the one below from Alex Mill is also a great choice.
Remember: this look is about stylish practicality. No ties or cufflinks here. Avoid embellishments and stick to useful accessories, like a pair of polarized sunglasses.
