THE HELM’S APPROACH: 8 SUMMER ESSENTIALS TO PAIR FOR AN EFFORTLESSLY COOL LOOKJune 7th, 2018
Alright, gents. It’s time to talk about summer attire.
It’s easy to throw on a T-shirt and call it a day, but if you want to look as good as you feel when you’re strolling the streets in the summer, you’ll need to elevate your style a bit.
Here are some of our favourite pairings for summer menswear.
1. Lux polos paired with sunglasses
First things first: Not all polos are the same.
Golf polos are great for the course, but they look sloppy on the streets. Upgrade your polo game and follow these rules:
Linen or cotton blend | No logos or branding | Clean fitting | Banded bottom if untucked
This one from Gran Sasso fits the bill.
Once you’ve got your polo game on point, pull it together with some slick sunglasses. Then throw on some casual trousers or chinos and you’re good to go.
Because we can’t say it enough: save the golf polos for the golf course.
2. Light denim paired with linen
Light denim is a must-have this season. It looks effortless, casual and it’s versatile. Just avoid leaning up against your dirty Porsche.
Linen is often overlooked because it’s seasonal, but we consider it a summer wardrobe staple. It never goes out of style, and you’ll be thankful for the breathable material when the mercury rises.
Pair a sport jacket with a light-wash jean for a fashion-forward look, or a patterned sport shirt with white denim for something more casual.
3. Floral shirts paired with light-coloured footwear
The floral trend is not going anywhere anytime soon, but choosing the right pattern is key.
Smaller, tighter floral patterns are super versatile and are easy to wear with just about any blazer or colour. It’s a great choice if you’re just trying out the floral thing for the first time.
If you’re feeling bold, dip into stronger patterns. Confidence always makes you stand out in the right way.
Pair floral shirts with lighter coloured shoes for a fresh, summer vibe. Keep it casual with sneakers from New Balance or dress it up with light grey oxfords from Magnanni.
4. Light bomber paired with a well-fitted T-shirt
We kind of threw T-shirts under the bus earlier, but the truth is, we love a good T. Make sure the fit is right, though.
Here are the basics of a well-fitted t-shirt:
1. Sleeves: The sleeve should hit around mid-bicep, and should hug your arm without being too tight.
2. Length: T-shirts should hit right below your belt line or slightly lower.
3. Width: The fit should be slim, but it shouldn’t feel restrictive. A looser fit is more on-trend than the skin-tight boy-band look of a decade ago. A bit of room is a better look than a shirt that’s too tight.
We’ll often dress up a good T-shirt with a blazer, but sometimes the occasion calls for something a bit more casual. A light bomber or Harrington jacket works perfectly. This is also the ideal combo for summer evenings when the temperature dips a bit.
