THE HELM'S GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT FORMAL OUTFIT

In the ever-changing world of men’s fashion it’s hard to know what’s appropriate to wear season to season.  This holiday season (which goes hand in hand with the black tie gala season) we’ll walk you through the right options to help you stand out.

Let us get one thing out of the way before we begin. Buying is the right choice, unless you’re rolling in a white stretch limo to grad - renting is no longer an option.
Let’s get started. There’s nothing more masculine, polished and refined than a man in tuxedo (if you don’t trust us, ask the woman sitting next to you right now).   The tux has evolved over the last 50 years.  Shapes have gotten a little closer to the body, lapels have narrowed a touch and the stripe on the leg is no longer a must on formal outfits.  In today's market men should be buying one in classic black or navy (Save the red tuxedo for the Hollywood awards shows).  We suggest the iconic one-button peak lapel, but also understand the appeal of a notch or shawl lapel as well.  Once the fit and lapel choice is out of the way, we need to briefly touch on accessories; a white shirt with a bow tie matching the colour of your tuxedo is what we would recommend, with a white silk pocket square folded nicely to match the shirt - Oh, and leave the cummerbund for granddad to wear.

I know you’re thinking - what about colour? What about style?  Where do I show my personality?   We believe that your personality should come through how you carry yourself and when wearing a tuxedo - So remember to hold open doors, refrain from having that last cocktail and above all, leave the profanity at home.

Well that covers the tuxedo.  But the invitation said “black tie optional” and you want to take “optional” to a whole new level.  We would like to introduce you to the dinner jacket!  This versatile piece of clothing can be worn with nearly every item in your wardrobe. Your favorite old rock band t-shirt…check.  Ripped up denim…check.  White shirt and bow tie…check.  This item really allows you to showcase your personality, and still be dressed appropriately for the occasion - perfect for a big night out on the town or the office Christmas party.  A dinner jacket will beat an ugly Christmas sweater any day of the week.

Although the tuxedo and dinner jacket share a similar level of formality, that’s really where their similarities stop.  So whichever choice you feel suits you, we have options in-store this season to have you looking your best
