A true rags-to-riches story, Ralph Lauren built one of the largest fashion brands in history from the ground up. Born in Bronx, New York October 14, 1939, to Jewish immigrants, Ralph Lauren grew up determined to make a name for himself. While he was known throughout his teens for his unique sense of style mixing a prep school look with a vintage feel, it wasn’t until 1967, that his career in fashion really began. While working for the tie manufacturer, Beau Brummell as a sales associate, Lauren began designing his own neck ties and marketing them under the name Polo. His designs were against the trends of the time, designed in a wider cut and crafted from high-end fabrics. He began selling his ties out of a single drawer in a showroom in the Empire State Building. Within a year, he was selling his ties at some of the largest department stores at the time including Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus. He later released his first men's line in 1968.
