3 Brands, 3 Easy Looks: Woolrich, Hestra, and Portuguese Flannel

November 5th, 2020

Sometimes we happen upon brands that we can’t stop styling together. For whatever reason, they seem to go hand-in-hand, and we never see a combination we don’t like.

This season, Woolrich, Portuguese Flannel, and Hestra are those brands. They all  have roots in traditional design and production, which might be why they work so well together.

Hestra is a Swedish brand that’s been producing hand cut and finished gloves since the 1930s, passing down the traditional craft of glove making on for four generations. They care deeply about what they do, from the leather selection and cutting right down to the final hand stitching, and it guarantees an incredible result every time.

Woolrich has been crafting winter outerwear since 1830, the longest out of any company in the US. They’ve outfitted some of the most celebrated winter adventurers, like Admiral Byrd’s Antarctic expedition team in 1939 and the workers who constructed the Alaska pipeline in the 1970s.

Portuguese Flannel hasn’t been around quite as long as Woolrich or Hestra, but their roots go back to the 1930s. António and Manuel Magalhães grew up around their great grandfather’s textile industry, and in 2012 they opened Portuguese Flannel to start their own venture. They still maintain access to the textile archives of their great grandfather, allowing them to draw on heritage fabrics for their modern-day collections.

No matter how we pair these three brands up they always look good together, so we thought we’d show you a few of our favourite ways to mix and match them.

Look 1

Woolrich Red Buffalo Check Reversible Jacket | Portuguese Flannel Dark Grey Flannel Shirt | Hestra Deerskin Shearling Gloves

It doesn’t get more rugged than a buffalo check, and since Woolrich literally invented the pattern in 1850, we’d say they know a thing or two about wearing it right. Worn with a dark flannel shirt, it’s a look that you can’t go wrong with.

Cork deerskin gloves

We particularly like this worn with Hestra’s deerskin gloves. Deerskin is a durable and hard-wearing leather, and it has a natural pebbled texture and a warm shearling lining. They’re refined but not delicate, and their hand-finished details give them a masculine edge.

Look 2

Navy and khaki vest hanging on hanger with striped flannel shirt underneath and gloves on the ground beside it and

Woolrich Katahdin Vest | Hestra Lambskin Shearling Gloves | Portuguese Flannel Striped Flannel Shirt

For a look that transitions from the chalet to the city streets, a vest is a must. Woolrich has perfected both the style and the functionality of the ideal layering piece with this Katahdin vest, combining cutting-edge tech with vintage-inspired design. It’s lightweight and not too bulky, so it looks clean and contemporary despite its incredible warmth.

Lambskin shearling gloves showing inside

The lambskin gloves we chose for this look are another great transition piece. They maintain a clean silhouette and soft exterior, but they feature rugged details like raw edges and shearling interior.

You can really layer this with any flannel shirt, whether you prefer solids, bold checks, or anything in between.

Look 3:

Navy alaskan overshirt with flannel shirt and dress glovesWoolrich Alaskan Quilted Overshirt | Hestra Edward Dress Gloves | Portuguese Flannel Lobo Corduroy Shirt

Our final look is a little on the dressier side, but it still maintains an easygoing vibe. The gloves set the tone for a classy look, done in a supple, smooth hairsheep leather. The classic navy overshirt is dark and crisp, and the rust corduroy shirt from Portuguese Flannel adds some colour and texture in a clean, understated way.
