The Helm's 2016 Outerwear Guide

Winter blew in early this year, how Canadian eh? One day we're on the golf course, and the next we're waking up to half-a-foot of snow on our driveways. The funny thing is, the snow didn't surprise anyone. We got up, put our boots on, grabbed the shovel and went to work. With the forecast of a long winter, there's no better way to embrace the coming elements, than to do it in style. Here are our top outerwear picks for the 2016 season.

This Gabriele Pasini double-breasted overcoat is one of the staff top picks this season. Cut from an ink navy heavyweight wool twill, this overcoat features brown buttons and patch pockets. Milanese fashion at its finest! $2250

More from the Italian department - this brown leather bomber from Barba Napoli represents a sporty elegance that southern Italians seem to execute effortlessly. It features a removable hood, ribbed cuffs and wool lining to help protect from the elements. $1475

Private White V.C. has impressed us since day one. This Workshop overshirt is a key layering piece from the Manchester based outerwear brand. Fabricated from their signature Ecoseam fabric, this jacket's clean lines and practicality are two attributes that resonate with the brand's entire product lineup. $525

Brunello Cucinelli is more than just luxury fabrics, its philosophy and lifestyle perspective have elevated this brand to a level of respect amongst the well-dressed. Locally produced in the quaint village of Solomeo, Italy, this lightweight vest is crafted from a wool, silk and cashmere shell with its warmth coming from a 100% goose down fill. $2995

There isn't one item in our fall/winter outerwear lineup that's more iconic and timeless than Private White's Pilots Bomber. This classic coat is crafted in Manchester using the finest English wool melton cloth, copper hardware and a removable shearling collar. $1095

Corneliani's ID collection has seamlessly meshed dresswear and sportswear. With its sporty feel, yet dressy sophistication, the ID overcoat has been our best-selling outerwear piece for the past four winters. Cut from 100% virgin wool cloth, this overcoat is produced in Italy with no details spared. $2095

Ralph Lauren's Purple Label collection resonates with this luxury vest from Polo. Produced in an ultra-supple goat suede and filled with a lightweight goose down fill, this vest will cut the elements of any fall day in style. $1295

Doing what they do best, this Corneliani jacket crosses over between dress and casual perfectly. Manufactured in Italy, it features a quilted wool outer shell, with quality finishing details like polished hardware and a ribbed windfly. $1295

The pinnacle of car coats comes to us courtesy of Brunello Cucincelli. No expense has been spared with the construction of this winter coat. It features a wind and rain resistant navy wool shell, cashmere ribbed collar and brushed hardware. 100% made in Italy using Italian materials. $4975

Sometimes a guy needs to step away from the standard overcoat and have some fun. Still falling in line with a taste level that we've come to expect from Corneliani, this coat is on the playful side. It features a grey/brown glenn check cloth and removable wind fly to help you battle the windy Alberta winter days. $2250

Finishing off our list is one of the must have fashion items of the season. Last winter's Pitti Uomo in Florence brought forth many fashion trends for us, one of which was the textured light-coloured overcoat. This Luigi Bianchi Manotva jacket is cut from a Luciano Barbaris "Heritage" inspired cloth and is produced at Lubiam's factory in Mantova. $1395
